London Metropolitan University 2003 – 2006: Undergraduate Degree, LLB (Hons) Law, 2:1 The University of Derby LEGAL EXPERIENCE 2010 – Present Pro Bono Case Worker, Mary Ward Legal Centre I am currently doing some pro bono work in the debt department. I help conduct interviews, research complex areas with respect to the new regulations concerning the Consumer Credit Act and its impact on loan agreements prior to the commencement of the 2006 Act. I also help file DRO applications as well as stay of proceedings and avoiding possessions, and I also help provide advice on debt/financial management. 2007 – 2008: Civil Litigation Paralegal, S. Satha & Co. Solicitors I dealt with a variety of legal issues ranging from breach of contract, negligence-based claims to complex boundary disputes. I also conducted family law and criminal litigation cases, and later became the team leader in the prison law department, whilst continuing to work on my civil litigation cases. I was also responsible for drafting court documents, partnership agreements and compromise agreements. I conducted my own advocacy in the majority of my clients’ cases across the UK. One of my most memorable experiences was in Leeds Combined Court where I addressed Lord Justice Munby on a complex family law case which involved cross-jurisdictional issues regarding UK and Muslim-Sharia law. 2004 & 2006: Case Worker, Wandsworth & Merton Law Centre I was responsible for data inputting, filing, writing up minutes of meetings, completing documents for asylum applications, employment and housing problems. I also organised the “surgery” evenings, and conducted some client interviews. 2005 – 2006: Welfare & Benefits Case Worker, Derby Law Centre I worked in the Welfare & Benefits team and I taught myself welfare law whilst simultaneously dealing with a broad range of benefit cases. I handled full client interviews, wrote interview notes, performed research for different cases, completed various legal forms, and conducted advocacy in Derby Tribunal. OTHER EXPERIENCE 2008 – Present Minute-Taker, Wandsworth Council I attend various company meetings, listen and take notes on the relevant issues, and then produce the minutes. I predominantly deal with the deaf and mental health community, thus listening is quite an important task to take accurate minutes. 1995 - 2008: Book-Keeper, Dave & Co My responsibilities and tasks included: Trial balance, balance sheet and profit and loss accounting and preparation, reconciliation of client wages and salaries, settlement of PAYE and NIC on a monthly basis, raising and filing of P45, P60 and other work-related documents in respect of clients’ employees, preparation of personal and company tax returns, and a pivotal figure in the disposal of the company as a going concern in 2008. SKILLS Business: Director and Company Secretary for a Young Enterprise company, responsible for organising meetings, typing minutes and agendas, as well as liaising between other directors and the local companies that were supporting and investing in our business. Languages: Good command of Gujarati. I have learnt French, Greek and Sanskrit at a basic level. I am currently learning Italian, and Portuguese. Computing: Excellent knowledge of Microsoft products. I am also proficient in Office Case Software for legal documents. INTERESTS AND ACHIEVEMENTS Music: I play the electric guitar and piano, and now I compose music. Sports: Captain of the hockey and judo team, and I played cricket and football for the school teams. I continue to play street hockey. I also practice capoeira which is a Brazilian martial art. Services: A one-month expedition to Romania to build a clinic, Duke of Edinburgh awards, conservation work, first aid courses, and served in the military cadets (parachute regiment). Legal: I was the network organiser for the law society in Derby University, and also part of their mooting team. To date I have participated in over 45 cases and I currently have a 100% success rate. Other: I am learning Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), and impromptu hypnosis.
