MIDEM, ADE and other events
MIDEM and ADE
For many years the main date in the IAEL calendar was its annual event held at Reed Midem's MIDEM, the international trade fair of the music business in Cannes, France. Following Reed Midem's decision to cease organising MIDEM in 2022 the IAEL has relocated its main event to the Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE) held in October every year.
Although the location means there is a strong music industry theme, the activities are relevant to lawyers working in other areas of media and entertainment law and the event is a great opportunity for members to meet in person, network and catch up.
At ADE, the IAEL organise three main sessions:
- The first session celebrates the launch of the annual IAEL Book which focusses on a subject chosen for its timely, international relevance. Chaired by the two editors of the IAEL Book, chapter contributors and other leading lawyers and figures from the industry are invited to debate and participate in presentations and Q&A sessions with the audience on key issues (both legal and commercial) relevant to the IAEL Book topic.
- The second session is the IAEL Legal Update which includes presentations on the key developments in entertainment, media and technology law in various territories during the previous year and also seeks to look ahead to the coming twelve months.
- The IAEL Masterclass, where speakers focus on one specific topic seeking to explore legal and commercial issues in greater detail.
In addition, the IAEL assists ADE in organising "meet the lawyers" sessions allowing show particpants to raise one-on-one legal issues with IAEL members.
You do not need to be a member of IAEL to attend these ADE sessions (although an ADE attendee registration is required) and anyone with an interest in entertainment, media or technology law would beneift from attendance.

Members only @ ADE
- All IAEL members are also invited to members-only social events such as dinners and cocktails as well as other ad hoc gatherings organised informally.
- The IAEL also holds its Annual General Meeting at ADE.
Other Markets & Festivals
Many other additional events across different locations. media sectors and dates have been included within the IAEL calendar over the years including regular participation in seminars and social gatherings at events like the Cannes Film Festival, SXSW in Austin, the Reeperbahn Festival in Hamburg and other leading entertainment industry events. In addition to the high quality content of formal legal presntations at these events, the importance of IAEL's presence - in an increasimgly online business world - lies in the opportunity for member lawyers from throughout the world to meet one another face to face. Accordingly, organising informal networking opportunities can be as valuable as the larger formal sessions.
